CoQ-10 exists in two chemical forms: oxidised (ubiquinone) and reduced (ubiquinol). Once oxidised, CoQ-10 (ubiquinone) is used in the body where it is converted to ubiquinol. Reduced CoQ-10 (ubiquinol) behaves in the same way, becoming ubiquinone as it performs its function in the body.
As we age, our bodies produce less and less CoQ-10. This vitamin-like substance can be found in a variety of foods, but organ meats, such as heart, liver and kidney, contain a particularly high level. It is also found in beef, soybean oil, sardines, mackerel and peanuts.
Coenzyme Q-10 is produced in the body and is involved in energy production. CoQ-10 is found in all cells of the body, but its levels are highest in the heart, skeletal muscle and other energy-demanding tissues.
