Carotenes are found specifically in vegetables and fruits, and beta-carotene in orange or dark green fruits. Some are precursors of vitamin A.
Free radicals are formed in the body when we breathe, digest food, exercise and even during sleep. They can be produced by emotional stress, ultraviolet light, radiation and environmental pollution. Free radicals damage the body by deteriorating cells, reducing defences and can cause "oxidative stress".
Vitamin E contributes to the protection of cells against oxidative damage.
